Chair Professor of Finance at Sabanci University
K. Özgür Demirtaş was born in Ankara. He attended primary school in Salihli district of Manisa. He completed his secondary and high school education in Izmir. In the university placement exam, he ranked as one of the top 50 students in Turkey. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Boğaziçi University.
At the age of 27 (in 2003), he earned a Ph.D. in finance from Boston College five years after enrolling in a field different than his undergraduate education.
In 2003, he started to work as an Assistant Professor at Baruch College City University of New York (CUNY). He was elected the best instructor within the Finance Department and Faculty of Business Administration in 2003 and 2004, respectively. In 2005, he was elected the best instructor within all the departments and the faculties obtaining the Award for Teaching Excellence in Madison Square Garden. In 2012, he obtained the highest teaching evaluation within the finance classes at Stern School of Business New York University (NYU).
His works have been published in the world's leading academic journals (Journal of Monetary Economics, Management Science, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Journal of Business Economics and Statistics). He had over 25 academic publications. His book was accepted for publication by Elsevier. Starting in 2004, he received a research grant from CUNY for six years in a row.
In 2007, he became Associate Professor at 31 with tenure (the right to work at City University of New York until the end of his life).
In 2010, he received a proposal from Sabancı University to serve as the Chair Professor of Finance at the Business Administration Faculty. The same year, he was listed within the top 20 professors out of over 1 million professors involving over 10 million student evaluations in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Scotland.
In September 2012, he left the tenure right in the United States and joined Sabancı University as the Chair Professor of the Finance. The same year, he was entitled to receive the Marie Curie Research Fund. Worth €100,000, it became the only project to be supported in the economy field by the EU in Turkey during its term.
Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş also became a founding board member of Turkey's first Savings and Financial Literacy Association (FODER) while serving Young Businessmen Association of Turkey (TÜGİAD), TAYSAD and DASK as a consultant.
